The fountain was donated by Consul E. F. Dan in connection with his 25th anniversary as a member of the city council in 1898.
”The heron and the grass snake” is a much cherished fountain, showing a heron which has caught a grass snake. The grass snake is twisting and turning in the beak of the heron while spirting frogs watch carefully. The fountain has a magnetic effect on children and adults alike. Everybody is drawn to go take a closer look at the battle between the two animals.
